Mesothelioma Compensation Closure For Manchester Man

A man from Manchester who was pursuing a mesothelioma compensation claim, received the news of his compensation victory just weeks before he died of the terminal illness.

The 75-year-old man from Stockport had worked as a heating engineer fitting boilers in Manchester town hall and was making his claim against Manchester City Council after he found out in May last year that he had mesothelioma and only months to live.

Council Accepted Responsibility For Mesothelioma

While working there, he was exposed to asbestos, a substance which is known for causing a range of serious illnesses. Despite being told by doctors that he had 12 months to live, the former local authority worker only survived for eight months, but it was long enough to see the council accept the blame for his illness.

Angry That Neglect Took Away Retirement Time Together

His wife says that despite the compensation news she is still angry because they had planned a retirement together and it had been taken away from them both. She says they were in the early stages of enjoying their retirement together and that her husband could have had another 10 years was it not for his illness.

The couple were married 54 years and the news of the illness had devastated them both. She said: “That first day we found out we both cried all day”, adding that the last few months of her husband’s life were ‘awful’ and in the end, it was blessing that he wasn’t suffering anymore.

The widow said that she thought asbestos should be stripped from all public buildings and in particular, schools, so that people wouldn’t have to suffer like her husband did.
