Rugby Player Attack Causes Brain Injury

A rugby player has suffered major head injuries after he was attacked on the pitch by members of the opposing team in March last year.

The 30-year-old man was playing a ‘friendly’ game for a Yorkshire amateur team. During the match, a player who played for the opposite side attacked the victim by punching him several times. He was given the red card for his actions.

Later in the game, the victim was attacked again when another player, punched him in the face with his arm. The victim walked off the pitch in protest but shortly after he collapsed and began having fits.

Blood Clot On His Brain

The victim walked off the pitch but later collapsed with a blood clot on his brain. Emergency surgery was carried out to relieve pressure that was being caused by a blood clot on the full back’s brain. He also had to have 44 staples in his scalp.

Head Injuries Meant He Had To Learn How To Walk And Talk Again

The rugby player’s injuries are said to have been ‘life-changing’. He was left unable to use the left side of his body and has had to learn how to walk and talk again since the incident. These disabilities also meant that the man has not been able to work.

The players who attacked him admitted to Leeds Crown Court that they had committed actual bodily harm. One of the men was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 2 years and both were given community orders.

A medical expert was unable to confirm whether or not the injuries had been caused by a blow to the head. Legal representatives for the defendants said they were ashamed of what they had done.
