Brain Injured Bus Victim Makes Miraculous Recovery
A woman from Croydon has beaten the odds of recovery after being hit by a double-decker bus in the town and has now become a volunteer for others like her.
The woman was waiting for a bus in Croydon after finishing work in May 2010 when she was struck by an oncoming bus. She was rushed by air to the Royal London Hospital where medics performed major brain surgery.
The woman admits that she was reluctant to begin a recovery path. Her 10-month recovery period included stays at a total of three hospitals also including the University Hospital of Lewisham and later the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability.
Determination Led To Recovery
She says that when she was faced with the prospect of sitting in a wheelchair that something ‘clicked’ and she became determined to get better.
She says: “It wasn’t easy, but the staff were fantastic and encouraged me every step of the way and the rehabilitation team have helped me realise that I can contribute to society by helping others who are also on the same long road to recovery.”
The woman, who previously worked as a drug and alcohol commissioner for young people, will never work in paid employment again. She still has some cognitive function problems including memory loss but physically she has made a full recovery.
The bus company insurers have admitted partial liability which will go some way in covering her loss of earnings and assisting the woman to continue to live as full a life as possible.
Headway UK Conference
The woman recently addressed over 400 people at a conference for brain injury charity, Headway UK and spoke of the level of importance of rehabilitation in the brain injury recovery process. She talked positively about always keeping hope and her desire to become a brain injury ambassador so that she can help other people in a similar position.
