Brain Injury Survivors Denied Support In Rehabilitation And Welfare Reforms

Major UK brain injury charity, Headway UK says brain injury survivors are being denied essential rehabilitation and support services because of a series of welfare reforms and cuts.

The charity says there are over one million people whose quality of life has deteriorated because of the number of different budget reforms the nation has been faced with. The report showed that a large majority (50%) no longer had access to services like rehabilitation.

Headway Says Cuts Are ‘False Economy’

Headway says these cuts are ineffectual and do not ultimately save costs because many brain injury survivors will possibly have to rely on alternative, expensive forms of care. A spokesperson for the charity, Luke Griggs, said the welfare reforms meant that people were being excluded from society because they don’t have the support they need. He added that brain injury survivors have no means of becoming in self-reliant and are likely to become more dependent on long-term care. It also means that families are faced with supporting their brain injury relatives. Mr Griggs said: “Many who feel unable to continue to care for their loved one may feel they have no option other than resorting to residential care, which can cost thousands of pounds a week.”

In addition, Colin Shieff who is a consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology as well as a trustee for Headway said: “Timely access to rehabilitation and continuing health and social care is needed to help people regain a degree of independence, improve their quality of life and reduce their reliance on more expensive long-term care.”
