Sarah was in her early twenties when she was a passenger in a serious car accident. She sustained a devastating spinal injury, namely C4 level motor complete tetraplegia and a severe head laceration.

Sarah was airlifted to hospital and admitted to a trauma unit where she underwent surgery. She was later transferred to a rehabilitation unit where she began an extensive rehabilitation programme.

Before her accident, Sarah loved to cook, looking after her family and maintaining her home. Sarah’s spinal injury left her without motor function in either of her legs and unable to stand or walk.

Unsurprisingly, Sarah also suffered psychologically, as she found it very difficult to accept that she was going to be completely reliant on others.

Sarah’s family contacted Jefferies shortly after the accident. One of our senior solicitors, Kathryn Harland, travelled to visit Sarah to learn more about the accident and her injuries and promptly set about making provisions in terms of care, treatment and rehabilitation.

Following her discharge from hospital, it was not appropriate for Sarah to return to her family home and she was re-housed in a bungalow. We quickly sought interim funds to buy Sarah a suitable home in which she could maximise her rehabilitation.

She now has two live-in carers who provide 24-hour care and support. She also has access to a specialist Case Manager, occupational therapists and physiotherapists as well as use of a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV).

We settled Sarah’s claim for nearly £5,000,000 in November 2017. This settlement provided her with the funds needed to access the specialist care and therapy she will require for the rest of her life. To help manage her settlement, we directed Sarah’s family to a financial planner who helped set up a Personal Injury Trust.
